Quotes
Whether on Twitter, Facebook or here on my site, occasionally I write things that others seem to connect to/identify with/enjoy. Some folks have been so gracious as to include my quotes alongside some of the great thinkers throughout history on their own sites. An odd juxtaposition perhaps, but I like it.
So I figured I’d try to gather up some of these quotes here, in case you find them worthy of your attention. And if you’re so compelled, please leave a comment and tell me what you think.
“Writing is my time machine, takes me to the precise time and place I belong.”
“May sleep envelop you as a bed sheet floating gently down, tickling your skin and removing every worry. Reminding you to consider only this moment.”
“If the light in your life has changed to yellow, I recommend you floor it. It’s safer than the alternative.”
“The sky, a perfect empty canvas, offers clouds nonetheless. They shift and drift and beg interpretation… such is the nature of art.”
“My flag is raised high today. For others to see, sure. But more so to find which way my wind is blowing. Almost time to chart a course.”
“Our past is like a footprint. It only confirms we were there. No burden on our future does it bear. Bring the rain, clear the pane of clutter.”
“May your passion be the kernel of corn stuck between your molars, always reminding you there’s something to tend to.”
“Pain is sometimes the cost of a meaninful existence. I can handle that.”
“A setting sun still whispers a promise of tomorrow.”
“I can see the orange haze on the horizon as the morning exhales a yawn, and seems to be ready to rise.”
“Most people, upon reaching the top, look down and enjoy the view. The smart money is on looking up and finding new mountains to climb.”
“Upturned toward the sun, eyes closed. That color and warmth I see and feel is the soul on fire. If only it remained when again my eyes opened.”
“Crossing over the boundaries we’ve been taught to live within is a tough business. But I’m getting the idea they’re not so formidable.”
“Releasing the pressure, it’s good for the teapot and the water. Try it sometime.”
“A bud can be beautiful, a work of art even. But I’m finding it simply can’t compare to the openness of the blossom. Looking for my sun.”
“Nature rejuvenates so quickly, so completely. Though we often view ourselves otherwise, we are nature.”
“I have a tickle in my brain. And it keeps making the corners of my mouth point toward the heavens.”
“The trees are whispering to me, reminding me of my roots, and my reach… shhhhhh… can you hear them? Selflessly sharing their subtle song.”
“First time I’ve picked weeds in almost a year. Definitely missed it. I love the smell of dirt and plant revealing their hidden nature.”
“I need neither future nor past, but to learn to take today not too fast.”
“On a cloudy night, when nothing seems above, still, there is love. Always love. For something, from someone. It’s never done. Never.”

This it is so poignant I must remember it – thank you
Hi Sharon,
Thanks for reminding me of that one…I’d completely forgotten about it. And thanks for dropping by.
I am pleasantly surprised!! I have a blog of my own and a young woman about my age commented on one of my posts, asking me to check out her blog. I did out of curiosity and found that I enjoy it quite a bit. I was skimming today and found this quotation: “I have a tickle in my brain. And it keeps making the corners of my mouth point toward the heavens.” I love that, and when I read that it was from a “Jeb Dickerson,” I figured I may as well follow the curiosity that was arousing in my mind. I guess I just wanted to know who this man was, what the context of the quotation was, and if she just stumbled on it by chance, as I was doing. I googled the name and was brought here. I have no idea what this all is, but I felt it was partially necessary to share my brief adventure and give a small thanks for the smile it brought my day.
Hi Emily,
That’s the way it often goes online…reading one thing inspires a curiosity that leads to something else, and so on. I’m grateful you kept at it and found me. As for the context of that quote, I wish I could recall, but as with much of my writing, it came from a unique and fleeting thought that has long been forgotten. But if it resonates with you, or anyone else, at any moment along your path, then I count it a success. Thanks so much for taking the time.
Hi Jeb, Love all your quotes! I agree with Samantha and I love…“My flag is raised high today. For others to see, sure. But more so to find which way my wind is blowing. Almost time to chart a course.”
Dawn

Hi Jeb,
Thanks for “I need neither future nor past, but to learn to take today not too fast”. I’m reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and have been on a journey of awakening for the past few months, well actually for the past few years, but I’ve fallen of the wagon a few times.
Your quote is very inspiring and it helps me keep on course. I posted on my facebook; hope it can inspire others.
Hi Aylene,

Jeb,
These quotes of yours are amazing and they have truly made my day. A person from my past came back recently to haunt my thoughts when I thought I had finally surpassed the last hurdle; now everything is muddled up in me. Your words have been a great help.
Stay inspired
Alex,
First, I’m sorry for my delay. Not sure how this comment snuck in here without me seeing it. But my apologies. Now then, thanks so much for your comment, it’s great to hear that my words have helped you in some way. That’s the purpose, naturally. Keep on keepin’ on…those hurdles won’t seem so formidable with every jump.
Cheers Alex, and thanks again.
“I can see the orange haze on the horizon as the morning exhales a yawn, and seems to be ready to rise.”

thank you for the inspiring quote..
Thanks Gi, I like that one too. Looking forward to the morning already.

“I need neither future nor past, but to learn to take today not too fast.”
Awesome. These are my favorite so far, especially the first one I listed. I LOVE quotes…Are there more?? If not, there should be! Keep us enlightened
Hi Amanda,
Um, there are probably more around the web that I’ve neglected to put down here, but not too many I don’t think. I promise to supply more just as soon as I have something worthwhile to say.
Thanks for the comment, glad they’re working for you.
Cheers…
A nice assortment of quotes on many subjects. Could I use some in the newsletter I create for the Manufactured Home Park in which I live? There are 300+ homes with people of all ages and cultures.
Hey Joleen,
Thanks for stopping in. Sure, feel free, though I do prefer that you put a link to where you found them if you don’t mind.
Cheers…
I attended the Arizona Best Fest on Sunday and saw this quote on a display in a pavillion about AZ. “A setting sun still whispers a promise of tomorrow.” The author was not attributed, so I googled the quote and found your site. This quote really resonnates with me and what I believe.
Hi Nancy,
), but I appreciate you letting me know. I’m glad you found the quote worthy of your attention, that’s all I ever wanted.
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment. Yeah, I think the ‘lack of attribution’ is pretty common around the web. Not a big deal (unless someone makes a million bucks off my words and doesn’t share.
Cheers…
I love all your quotes but do not see this one on here. I found it on another site. But it says so much.
There are plenty of people holding flashlights casting shadows, offering directions. Perhaps it’s best if you light your own way. ~Jeb Dickerson, …
Ah yes Sonya, that is on a postcard I made a while back. I’ll have to get that posted on this page as well. Thanks…
Hi, Jeb just to let you know I did use some of your quotes in the March Park newsletter and put your URL in the column for those. I wanted to send you a copy (PowerPoint) but I don’t have another method of contact!
Hey Joleen,
Cool, I’m glad it worked out. You can reach me direct at jeb at howtomatter dot com, if you like.
Well. I’m only 16 but I’m fascinated at what people say that deserves recognition to be called a “Quote”. It’s morning so I Googled some morning quotes and that led to these. I’ve already sent some to my friends (all accredited to you ^_^ ). I really enjoyed “May sleep envelop you as a bed sheet floating gently down, tickling your skin and removing every worry. Reminding you to consider only this moment”, (I copied it to my Sticky Notes) primarily because I love being creative in my wording and that fits the description perfectly, thank you.
My ultimate favorite is definitely: “Our past is like a footprint. It only confirms we were there. No burden on our future does it bear. Bring the rain, clear the pane of clutter.” I’m always haunted by my past, all my bad choices and stupid decisions. This quote was a nice reminder that I’m no longer that person from before, and that I never will be there again. Thank you oh so very much!
Hey Drew,
I’m really glad you enjoyed some of my quotes, and I’m very thankful that you took the time to say as much. I wonder about a 16 year old whose past haunts him…thinking perhaps you’re being a bit hard on yourself. The successful living of a life requires loads of bad decisions, countless failures. And because of this, you’re absolutely right, you’re *not* that person from before. But you have learned from him, that much is clear. Go easy on yourself, and keep on making decisions…good, bad or otherwise. It’s way better than the alternative (being too scared to decide at all).
Cheers…
I’m not a particularly verbose person. I think that’s why I like taking pictures… they speak for themselves.
i like this quote very much im a photographer and it fits me so well
thanks jeb
Really glad you like it Andrew, thanks for saying so. Cheers…
